Faster Load Times

The new site boasts faster load times, as the new code accomplishes the same functions at a fraction of the original file sizes. The original was 44MB on our server, and the new one is only 9MB, even though it has all the functionality and MORE, of the original. The smaller our files are, the faster they load.

New Real Time Themes

The new site sports a fresh array of themes built around a regional scheme. Unlike the original site, these themes load on-the-spot and change the elements of the page. Also, the new code applys your theme choice across all the pages in the portal and remebers your selection the next time you visit the site.

Jazzed Up Kidz Section

The new Kidz Portal now has it’s own unique themes, fashioned with kids in mind. Also of note is that the new code remembers the theme chosen for the Kidz page, separate and distinct from the main portal.

New Directory Layout

The new Caribbean Directory has a new layout, designed to push more content at the user, faster. The new code also allows you choose a new theme for the Directory, which is applied across all the pages.

The Bajan Dictionary offers barbadians and tourists a look into the Barbadian dialect. We decided to revamp and refresh this site for Barbados’ 42nd Independence celebrations this year.

GoWEB Caribbean Anthems allows anyone to hear the National Anthems of Caribbean countries and get the lyrics as well. This is a great educational resource and we decided to revive it along with the Dictionary.

These new features have been added using a “Tab System”. This just means that instead of cluttering your homepage by displaying all of this content at once, you can simply display the content you want, when you want it, using tabs.

And remember that we are still listening to your feedback, so drop us a comment or email. If you’ve got an idea for a new theme, let us know. Meanwhile, we’ll be busy thinking up some fresh new themes to add to the Theme Park every here and there, just to keep things fresh and interesting.

• You email services, like hotmail, yahoo mail and gmail can now be found in first column of your homepage. We are calling this column the GoWEB LaunchPad, because it is designed to give you quick access to the sites you use most. 
• The Launch Pad also has links to YouTube and Hi5. We are evaluating the popularity of websites used by Caribbean people for this LaunchPad, which is a work in progress.
• You channels and services are now on the right hand side. Our users use their email more frequently than they do channels, so this change was made in favour of our users. This area also gives the channels and services a more compact design, cutting down on the amount of page scrolling you have to do.
• Our Web Design and Web Hosting services have moved to a new domain. ElohimCreations.org is the new home of these services, along with new ones, like Graphic Design and other multimedia related services. 

1. Turn Off Your Desktop Icons.

Believe it or not, something as displaying icons on your desktop pulls system resources and you can feel the effects if you don’t have much resources to spare. You can turn on or off your desktop icons by right-clicking on any blank area of the desktop, opening the “Arrange Icons By” submenu and then clicking “Show Desktop Icons” to either check or uncheck it.

2. Turning Off Your Desktop Wallpaper.

Displaying an image on your desktop can be appealing but it can also pull system resources if you don’t have much to spare. You can turn off your desktop wallpaper by right-clicking any blank area of the desktop and choosing “Properties”. The “Display Properties” window will open. Choose the “Desktop” tab, and choose the “Blank” option from the list of wallpapers provided.

3. Turning Off The Luna Visual Style.

The default Windows XP interface is blue, and is called Luna. It also comes in Silver and Olive Green variations. This looks really nice, but it take significant system resources to display this interface. If you need to speed up your Windows XP system, you can consider reverting back to the classic interface from Windows 98/2000/ME. To accomplish this, enter the “Display Properties” by right-clicking a blank area of the desktop. Choose the appearance tab, and in the “Windows and Buttons” drop down box, choose “Windows Classic Style” and click “OK”.

4. Turning Off The Welcome Screen.

If found that turning off the friendly Windows Welcome Screen can speed up your system’s startup time. The drawback is that if you have more than User Profile on the system, users will have to type their names in a box to log on, rather that click their name on the Welcome Screen. However, if there’s only one user or one user account on your computer, you might want to consider turning off the Welcome Screen. To achieve this, open Control Panel by clicking Start, and then Control Panel. Choose “User Accounts” from the Control Panel. If you have ‘Category View’ enabled in Control Panel, you will have to click the “User Accounts” icon, after clicking the User Accounts Category. Once in the “User Accounts” window, choose the option that says “Change the way users log on or off”. Then uncheck the option that says “use The Welcome Screen”. You can always turn it back on later through the same procedure.

These are just a few easy things you can do to see a difference in system speed. If you have a fast computer, you may or may not feel the effects of these changes. As time goes on, I will share more tips for speeding up your system, but I hope these 4 will be of help to someone.
